Page & Culture aims to highlight the impact African American literature has had on American culture. This site will present some close readings of anthologized texts. It is important to note that the texts analyzed on this site were chosen because of their substantial influence and unique perspective, but they are not the only important works in the African American literary body. As a woman of color, the science of oppression fascinates me. African American authors are uniquely qualified to speak on the trials and tribulations of American racism and do so with a critical eye. It is my sincere wish that my interpretation of these texts will inspire you to read more works from these authors. I also hope that you leave this page with a deeper understanding of systematic racism in the United States and explore the rich body of art created by the African American community.
